Re:Invitation: WRC Annual Meeting, April 30

Dear Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to invite you to the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Worker Rights Consortium University Caucus. The meeting will take place on Thursday, April 30 in Washington, DC. It is a one-day meeting and will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It will held at the Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies, at 640 Massachusetts Ave., NW.

I hope you can join us.

It has been another tough and challenging year for labor rights in the garment industry, with developments both disturbing and hopeful. We look forward to reviewing with you the events of the last twelve months, in the collegiate apparel sector and beyond, and discussing the work the WRC has done to defend university labor standards and to promote positive change in the industry.

Among the topics on the meeting agenda are implementation of the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh; the rising tide of violence against workers in that country and the WRC’s response; our ongoing effort to correct systematic violations of the minimum wage law in the Haitian garment sector and the important progress that we have recently confirmed; and recent findings concerning violations of the rights of women workers. In each of these areas we will focus on the impact and implications for university code compliance.

We will also review in depth a number of key WRC investigations and corrective action efforts at collegiate suppliers – including Industrias de Exportaction in Honduras, PT Jaba Garmindo in Indonesia and Manufacturas Del Rio in El Salvador – and new projects, including trainings for workers and worker organizations in Cambodia on collegiate and corporate labor codes, which we are carrying out in partnership with the American Bar Association, and new WRC enforcement work on behalf of the US Department of Labor.

As always, there will be ample time for questions and discussion and the opportunity for university representatives to raise any issues of interest.

The full agenda for the meeting will be available soon. We will also shortly be providing information on lodging options. In the meantime, please let me know if you have any questions.

I hope you can join us on April 30. If you have not previously RSVPed for the meeting, please do so when time permits. RSVPs should be sent to my colleague, Lynnette Dunston, at [email protected]

Best,

Scott
