At its meeting last month, the WRC Board of Directors voted unanimously to recommend to affiliated universities and colleges that they require licensees sourcing university logo apparel from Pakistan to become signatories to the Pakistan Accord on Health and Safety in the Textile and Garment Industry (Pakistan Accord). We write today to share this recommendation with you.
The WRC recognizes the Pakistan Accord is a critically important mechanism to ensure factory safety and a vitally important means to protect garment workers making university logo apparel in the country.
The safety risks to factory workers in Pakistan are very high, and the overwhelming success of the Accord model in Bangladesh demonstrates that this is the best means available to collectively address these risks. We look forward to working with you, and with licensees sourcing from Pakistan, to advance the Pakistan Accord’s life-saving work.
The Pakistan Accord already has 58 brand signatories, including Colosseum Athletics, the first university licensee to sign. Additional background information on the Pakistan Accord from the WRC can be found here and here.
If you have questions about this recommendation, or any aspect of the Pakistan Accord, please let us know.
